Every year on 7 June, we celebrate Earl Grey Day.

The date marks the anniversary of the Reform Act of 1832, one of the most significant pieces of legislation in British political history. Introduced during the premiership of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, the Act transformed the British electoral system and helped shape modern democracy.

While the Earl Grey name is recognised around the world through the famous tea that bears it, the story extends far beyond the teacup. For generations, the Grey family has played a role in British public life, from politics and diplomacy to military service, exploration and education.

Why 7 June?

On 7 June 1832, King William IV granted Royal Assent to the Great Reform Act.

The legislation expanded representation in Parliament, addressed long-standing electoral inequalities, helped modernise Britain’s political system, and became one of the defining achievements of Charles Grey’s government.

The Act remains one of the most important milestones in the development of British democracy.
